When in chat rooms, instant messengers such as ICQ or MSN or when emailing somebody, don't use capital letters for sentences.

Most people on the internet see this as "shouting" and get quite offended. Only use capital letters if you feel you need to emphasize a certain word.

Learn all the little abbreviations that are used such as "LOL" and "ROFL".
The use of these abbreviations, lol (laughing out load) and rofl (rolling on floor laughing) can make your net friend on the other end know how you feel.

If you flame somebody in a chat room or by email, remember that you are liable to prosecution just as much as you are in the real world. You are not an anomynous entity and your identity can be traced.

Treat people on the net as you would in everyday life and your internet experience will be a very enjoyable one.

Here's a few more chat abbreviations that make typing a little easier.

404 - I haven't a clue
AFAIK - As far as I know
AFK - Away from keyboard
ASAP As soon as possible
A/S/L? - Age/sex/location?
B4N - Bye for now
BAK - Back at the keyboard
BBS - Be back soon
BTW - By the way
BWL - Bursting with laughter
